Chapter 7

Ancient Egypt

Eli sensed something was wrong. He opened his eyes, acknowledged Micha still lay in the tent, his legs intertwined with his. He heard one of the horses whinny and then the smell hit him.

Marauders!

These were robbers. His nose alerted him that these men had been on the road. Drenched with sweat, they lacked the perfumed scent of any honorable Egyptian traveler who clung to bathing rituals. If they had respectful intentions they would have taken advantage of the water in the oasis and bathed.

The desert breeze wafted their smell again. He slowly moved Micha’s legs, then scanned the tent and swore under his breath. His ax and sword were on the other side of the tent. He knew his moves could be detected if he moved like a human. He had no choice.

In a blur, he got up, grabbed both ax and sword, and ran outside the tent. One man stood near the entrance, another by the horses, and he sensed the third stood in the rear of the tent.

Although naked and exposed, he stood and loudly shouted. “What do you want?”

The man closest to the tent had his face covered, and jumped back. “We see the Hyksos chariot and know that you carry money so hand it all over.”

“Sure. That’s no problem as long as you promise to leave once I hand it over.”

“We have no problems with that,” he hissed, brandishing a sword of his own.

Eli stepped backwards back into the tent and found Micha awake, his eyes bulging. “What’s going on? I heard you say something about turning money over to them. Whatever we have isn’t enough, and it isn’t our money, Eli. It’s Yusuf’s!”

“Yusuf won’t miss this money. He will miss you though.”

Micha shook his head.

Eli looked at him, nodding to him. “Come on. This is just money.”

“All right,” said Micha. He took the coins that were folded in the simlah that lay on the ground.

Eli grabbed it, along with loose tent fabric, which he tied around his waist. With the coins in one hand along with the ax, he walked out of the tent, making sure he held the sword in the other.

“Here!” shouted Eli, throwing the coins at the man who stood near the tent entrance. The covered man, bowed in an exaggerated movement.

“You Hyksos pigs are all alike.”

Eli heard the steps of the man behind him and before he approached, Eli saw the man who spoke earlier lunging towards him with his sword. Eli jumped, swung his sword, cutting the back of the first man’s back, almost severing his shoulder as he simultaneously swung his ax with the other hand cutting the second man’s chest. Both men fell, gasping at their mortal wounds.

Eli turned to the third man who stood by the horses. Once the third realized what happened, he jumped on one of their horses and tried to get away. Eli whistled, and the horse raised his front legs, and reared. The third man fell off.

As he walked towards the third man, Eli cautioned him.
